If there’s one thing I hear a lot from students, it’s how much better they feel after yoga class. There’s a lightness to them that wasn’t there before. Sometimes it’s surprising how much better we feel after an hour or so of moving meditation. Perhaps it’s surprising because we expect to feel better in our bodies, but we don’t always expect to feel so much better in our minds.
There’s this “magic” thing that happens during yoga class. For most of us, that class is filled with physical challenges of some sort. Your to-do list is temporarily pushed aside while you focus on your breath, where your arm is in space, what your spine is doing, and where your feet are. Whether that challenge is balancing on one foot or keeping still for 5 minutes, it’s all very physical. The mind is so drawn to what the body is doing that a deeper connection is formed. This connection is where the magic happens. You begin to notice things that you didn’t before. More subtle things. Your mind experiences a respite from your busy life, and you are able to go inwards. Of course, you don’t have to be moving to find this magic, but the poses that we do in yoga class certainly open a doorway to it.
Yoga is a gift to both the body and the mind. So next time you are on your way to class and you are looking forward to a good workout, remember that it’s the work you do on the inside that is the most powerful. That’s the yoga magic.
